Did you know that there are many elders who would not be able to stay in their homes in the community without the subsidized assistance of South Shore Elder Service (SSES)?

While Federal and State government funds cover a substantial portion of the services SSES provides within our service area, many needs go unmet.  Only with the generous support from our friends in the community are we able to fully meet our mission of helping older adults live independently in the community.

If asked, most people would want to stay in the community so not only are we meeting that need we are saving valuable dollars that would be spent in a skilled facility.

The following story is only one example of the many seniors that SSES has worked with to enable them to be in their own homes.

The Long Journey Home

When Eileen C. went to the hospital for a knee replacement in 2007 she never dreamed it would be 4 years before she came home. Eileen’s passion was ball room dancing which she wanted to continue after her surgery but dancing would not be in the cards again. After surgery she developed MRSA infection. That began a series of hospitalization and rehabs which twice almost resulted in her death. Eileen has spent the last three years in a Skilled Nursing Facility, but she and her husband David, her biggest supporter, always hoped she would come home.

There were many barriers that needed to be overcome if Eileen was going to be able to come home.   South Shore Elder Services (SSES) Staff met with Eileen, David, and the nursing facility staff on several occasions to determine her needs and how best to meet them.

First, David worked on remodeling the home to make it wheelchair accessible.  He also made adaptations to the bathroom and access into the home.  Next SSES would have to be able to come up with a service plan that would meet her daily care needs.  SSES was able to develop a plan that included skilled nursing, Home Health Aides, Personal Care Attendants, environmental adaptations and Personal Emergency Response System.

Finally in September 2011 Eileen returned home.  The service plan put in place and monitored by SSES is working well and Eileen says “my aide watches over me like an angel”. Because she and her husband have been apart so long, they had to get to know each other again. Eileen even had to build a bond with her 14 year old cat “Smokey.

Although being home has been a series of adjustments the smile on her face says it all

. . .  Home is indeed where the heart is.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a special Valentine’s celebration and fund raising event on Thursday February 9, 2012. (Please see the enclosed invitation).
